Empire State Of Mind, since 2007, Michael Eric Dyson has been teaching courses related to hip hop at Georgetown University. His ability to articulate the message within rap music has provided a platform for his commentary on the genre.
This year a new course Dyson’s teaching at Georgetown, the “Sociology Of Hip-Hop — Urban Theodicy of Jay-Z,” is receiving a lot of attention. The course is said to confront “topics present in any sociology course: racial and gender identity, sexuality, capitalism and economic inequality,” but there are some that question the vaildity and necessity for this type of analysis.
